What most companies that ask this question wish to achieve is real-time inventory updating as items are received, picked for shipment, or issued to jobs. We highly recommend real-time updating and urge that you make this a standard practice.
The easiest way to achieve real-time inventory updating is to install computer workstations in the factory (or on the perimeter) and train your warehouse personnel to make their own entries in the Order Picking, Job Issues & Receipts, and PO Receipts screens.
Most of these entries are made using the "pre-fill" option, which receives, picks, or issues the entire order, job, or PO with the click of a button. This process does not require barcodes or hand-held scanners or special product labeling.
We have plans to develop an interface with hand-held bar code scanners that will enable your warehouse people to scan labels or pick lists and enter quantities as items are received, picked, issued, or counted. These hand-held devices update the database via wireless connections. In our opinion, most companies will find the "pre-fill" option easier to manage; however, in some environments, especially where intensive lot control tracking is involved, the barcode scanning option would be helpful.
We have found that the best policy is to furnish development specifics only when projects are in the final coding and testing phase.
