DBA is primarily a "discrete" manufacturing system designed to make multiple units, yet unlike almost all discrete systems, it also includes several key features that make it suitable for batch process manufacturing where products are made in batches instead of units. Batch process manufacturing is commonly used to make products such as food, chemicals, and plastics.
In the bill of material you have the option of defining usage quantities against a specified batch size. When a product can be made in different batch sizes, you can use revisions to store the specifications for each batch size.
The bill of material supports multiple "outputs", which can be used for bi-products and co-products that are yielded from the batch process. Total cost is allocated to each output based on a cost ratio.
Finally, you can define formulas against components. At time of job creation you are prompted to enter one or more variables and the program will use the formula to dynamically calculate the component's usage quantity.
DBA also includes lot control capability, which is essential to batch process manufacturing.
