Specialty Manufacturing

Can DBA be used for custom manufacturing?

DBA is ideal for custom manufacturing. By "custom manufacturing" we are referring to make to order products that are either variations of standard products or are products configured from scratch with each order.

DBA is optimized for make to order environments, whether you make customized products, custom products, or standard products. In all cases jobs can be created instantly in the MRP screen directly from sales order line items for make to order products.

If you wish to customize a standard product, you can go into the job and modify the job details to reflect any options or custom specifications required for this one customer's order. Any changes you make to the job details have no effect on the product's standard bill of materials.

When you need to make a custom product entirely from scratch, you can generate a "custom" item during quote or sales order entry using the custom job output generator. A job is instantly created by MRP without any details. You can then go into this job and create the job details a variety of ways.

You can copy the details from a previous job, for example, if you've made something similar to this product before. You can then edit this job's details for any differences. You can copy in one or more phantom assemblies, which are subassemblies or sets of commonly used components. Machine builders in particular often configure jobs by copying in building blocks of phantom assemblies.

You also can enter routing and job details from scratch, directly in the job. Unlike general accounting systems where product details are defined in a fixed bill of materials that doesn't allow for exceptions, in DBA a bill of materials is optional. Jobs can be originated from a bill of materials or job details can be configured or entered without using a bill of materials at all.

Once you've finalized your custom job details, an estimated job cost is calculated, which can help you establish the final selling price that gets quoted or charged.

This flexible job structure that is not dependent on a fixed bill of materials enables you to use DBA to manufacture virtually any type of product, whether it be a standard product, a product with options, or completely custom product.

In the quote or sales order you can enter unlimited notes at the order header level or line item level to provide your customer with whatever level of detail is needed to document the customization associated with the order. You can also use non-stock descriptors or freeform line items to bill the customer for itemized charges associated with product options or special features.
